INTRODUCTION OF TWCW FOUNDER

My name is Rosalynd Hicks. I am a board certified Internal Medicine physician. Prior to my marriage and relocation to the San Fernando Valley in 2004, I had a well established practice in San Diego, California. For several years, I practiced in a multi-specialty setting in one of the leading medical groups in San Diego and achieved shareholder status. I have extensive experience in providing care for patients in hospital, outpatient, and skilled nursing facility settings. I attribute the gratifying experience of my previous successful practice to the incorporation of four key objectives into my style of practice:

1) Striving to achieve effective channels of compassionate communication with my patients.

2) Helping patients to make better decisions and positive changes in their lifestyles by making patient education a priority.

3) Encouraging patients to be involved in their care, as much as possible.

4) Treating patients as I would want to be treated; with compassion and respect.

Shortly after our marriage, my husband and I found out that we were expecting our first child. After receiving this wonderful information, I decided to place my career on a “temporary hold status” and stay at home to be the primary caregiver of our child throughout his infant and toddler stages. Our son, Jeremy, is four years old now and was recently diagnosed with Autism Disorder. Still as the primary caregiver of our son, I have rejoined the medical workforce in order to serve as a medical doctor for the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County-but in a different yet special way.

Like so many of my fellow primary care physician colleagues in San Diego and throughout the San Fernando Valley, I was subjected to the enormous demands placed on me due to today’s constantly evolving and strained medical system. The daily mission to maintain the quality of care was often threatened by time constraints due to increasingly overtaxed outpatient schedules and inpatient hospital duties. As a result of this problem, I have witnessed the compromise in the quality of patient care, decrease in medical compliance, the increased draining of acute care resources, as well as, the continual decline in the physical–mental-emotional health of a community. I encountered numerous unhappy patients fleeing from primary care practices which have succumbed to the mounting burden of the current medical system. I have listened to countless complaints from patients; they felt unheard, confused and frustrated as they felt as though they were rushed in and out of their doctor’s offices. The office visits were perceived as cold, impersonal and uncaring. Patients were left with gaps in their knowledge of their own medical conditions, as well as a lack of guidance enabling them to make informed and appropriate decisions that greatly impact their health.

Efficient use of time available to thoroughly educate patients about their health and doctor-patient communication continues to be a recurring challenge and critical aspect of delivering quality primary patient care.

I am concerned about the ongoing problem with patient care as outlined above and have focused my attention to champion change in this area. In particular, there are many communities in the San Fernando Valley where women’s health education and overall well being must become a priority. Upon re-entering the general field of Internal Medicine, my initial focus will be establishing a part of my practice dedicated to specializing in Women’s Health.

Although our circumstances may differ, I, like countless of other women understand the debilitating toll of juggling various responsibilities, roles and obligations as a woman in this fast-paced society. I am a wife, mother, daughter, role model, confidant to friends, and medical professional. Having a natural ability to communicate and teach, it is my passion, as well as, my goal to create The Wellness Center for Women (TWCW), a nonprofit community based woman’s resource center located in the Los Angeles County, San Fernando Valley.
